The reasons for our success: Macmillan journalists

Macmillan freelances sum up the reasons for their success:

First, the staff journalists negotiated a banding system. Any chief sub gets the same as any features editor. Management can't pit people against each other or exploit petty jealousies.

Secondly the chapel "elected" a new Mother/Father of Chapel every year; rather, everyone was press-ganged into becoming an active trade unionist in a small way. So the editors of three-quarters of the magazines, and the publishing editor of one of the divisions, have all been Mothers or Fathers of Chapel.

Thirdly, the company has to fight every year over pay; but they get loyalty. The best health journalists work for Macmillan, and stay.
