VNU breaks wind

A WIND of change is blowing through the notoriously hostile VNU (scene of a bitter de-recognition battle in the late 1980s). One of the editors has been surveying freelances' opinions of payment procedures, apparently on instructions from management.

In fact, VNU's not too bad, especially as the day rate - £150 for a news shift with no nonsense about deductions - is ahead of most other IT publishers. However the survey is a chance to register another complaint: the "all rights in perpetuity" clause which VNU editors are ordered to include in commissions.

Even here, things may be moving. Martin Lynch, who carried out the survey, replied that: "I believe something else is being done with the 'All Rights' situation."

Let's keep up the pressure.
