French journos win on rights

THE French Syndicat National des Journalistes on July 21 won a case against the newspaper Le Progrés de Lyon, which had been publishing four members' work without permission on the Minitel service and the Web. The court ordered the newspaper to stop - and ruled that the electronic editions constituted a separate publication. The publishers had tried something very like the New York Times "collective work" defence - the US appeal against which should be heard any year now. Voyez aussi http://www.globenet.org/snj/.
