Minor tax victory at the Observer

A MEMBER writes: I started a correspondence with the Observer and the Inland Revenue back in February, using the NUJ model letter, about being taxed PAYE for my casual subbing shifts, and the outcome seems to be a success.

A letter from the Observer's tax office says "It would appear that it is not the intention of the Observer to engage casual sub-editors on a self-employed basis. All casual sub-editors engaged by the Guardian Media Group are regarded as casual employees."

The Revenue, however, is prepared to give me a No Tax code, which (I was told by the inspector on the phone) allows me to set my travel expenses from [Oop North] against tax. I would be happy to provide copies of correspondence for anyone else trying to do the same thing: write c/o the Freelance.
