Dole stalks D'Olier Street

THE Irish Times, for long one of the largest employers of freelance and contract journalists in the Republic of Ireland, has announced plans to shed 250 jobs. The Dublin Printing Group of Unions has appointed a financial expert to examine the company's books and while the Group is opposing compulsory redundancies a drop in employment numbers is on the cards.

There are serious implications for freelances - massive cuts are being proposed in editorial budgets, with freelance contributors and those on contracts for service being targeted.

Meanwhile the NUJ is seeking an urgent meeting with management of ireland.com - the Irish Times on the web. The ink is barely dry on a new agreement at the ireland.com and improved shift rates have been implemented.
