Rough at the top

A FREELANCE NUJ chapel for book authors? "Never been done before", they said. "Can't be done now." Some Rough Guide authors and freelance organiser John Toner thought differently. After a series of recruitment meetings in the autumn, a chapel was formed in November.

"Never get the company to talk to you," they said. Well they were wrong. The company's management met with Toner and said they would be happy to talk to him any time about issues concerning individual NUJ members or about Rough Guides authors in general. Said Toner: "We have already recruited quite a number of Rough Guides authors, but we hope the company's positive response will encourage more to join the NUJ. The more members we recruit, the stronger our negotiating position will be."
