COURSES

Copyright for Journalists... and more

FIND OUT how freelance journalists (and staff) can benefit from knowing the ins and outs of copyright. NUJ Training is organising a course in London on Wednesday 20 July and it's just £10 to members.

When you write an article or take a photograph or put together a broadcast as a freelance journalist, you start off owning the copyright in what you create. That copyright is effectively what you trade in when you allow different outlets to use your work in return for paying your fee - and the more you know about how to protect and exploit it, the more income you are likely to make. During this course, an NUJ lawyer outlines what you need to know about copyright.

Freelance journalists with an interest in taking more control of their work and increasing their income should attend. We also welcome staff journalists wanting to know what is significant to their freelance contributors or thinking of going freelance themselves.

Freelances and would-be freelances can benefit from our one-day seminars Getting Started As A Freelance, for those at the beginning of their freelance life: it will next be held in Manchester on Friday 29 July. The Pitch And Deal session is for people who want to market their work better and make more money, and it's happening in Manchester on Saturday 30 July and in London on Wednesday 3 August.

Think too about the course on how to use the Freedom of Information Act: at least one member has found it "extremely useful". For details of these and others, and to book onliine, see www.nujtraining.org.uk
