Tax deadline 31 January

If you haven't filled in and sent off your April 2006-April 2007 Self Assessment tax return yet, it needs to arrive at HM Revenue and Customs by Thursday 31 January 2008, either by post or using the online Self Assessment form, available from www.hmrc.gov.uk/sa. After that date, you stand to be fined £100 for a late tax return.

We've heard that Revenue and Customs no longer send receipts to acknowledge that your paper tax return has arrived, and that the only way to get proof that you've submitted a return is to send an online tax return. If you are owed a tax refund and want it deducted from the amount you will owe for 2007-2008, then your online tax form needs to be in by Sunday 30 December 2007.
