THE FREELANCE Office celebrated World Copyright Day, 23 April, by mailing out postcards with a code of best practice on commissioning freelances to 200 commissioning editors at "quality" newspapers. This evolved from the Quality Street network www.londonfreelance.org/QualityStreet, aimed at promoting best commissioning editor practice. There are plans for an NUJ Training course on commissioning in the fairly near future.
The postcard outlined editors' responsibilities, urging them to respond promptly to pitches and refrain from nicking ideas, to pay promptly and in full whether the publication eventually uses the idea or not, and to offer to pay reasonable expenses.
