Digital imaging course confirmed
London Freelance Branch's one-day introductory photographers' course on Digital Workflow: Working with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, which was postponed from last year, is now confirmed for Tuesday 31 March, and there are spaces still free.
The course will be a basic introduction to working with digital photography, from camera to client or print. It will include an introduction to simple “quick and dirty” ways of correcting and enhancing images - the crucial things that photographers need to do - which do not compromise the integrity of the image as a document.
Participants should bring their own notebook computers or laptops (PC or Mac) so they can put these into practice during the day. The day will be based around Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop (on Mac or PC) but much of what will be covered will also apply in general to other software such as Photoshop Elements and Aperture etc. Participants can bring whatever legal copy of Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Lightroom or Aperture they have already downloaded onto their laptop.
If you don't have any of the above software installed, there are free 30-day trial versions you can obtain via the Adobe website, but contact the course tutor in advance for guidance on these trial versions of digital imaging software, as the installation process takes a long time, and the trial software comes with built-in limitations they don't tell you about.
There's been an enquiry from a member who hasn't got a laptop: any leads on sourcing a borrowed laptop for a day to the contact emails below, please.
The course will cover some simple background theory, exposure for digital photography, the choice of RAW or jpeg, archiving and storage of files, simple image correction and manipulation, some useful Photoshop filters, metadata (captions, keywords, copyright etc), industry standards for supply of images and general workflow.
The course tutor is photographer and LFB member Peter Marshall.
The one-day course is on Tuesday 31 March at the Living Space community centre, Coral Street, Waterloo, London SE1, at the corner of Coral Street and Waterloo Road, nearest Tube Waterloo or Lambeth North. The course runs from 10am sharp to 5pm, with coffee and registration from 9.30 am.
The cost of the course (including lunch) is £55 for NUJ members and £85 for non-members.
To book a place on the course, email Isabelle Merminod or the course tutor, Peter Marshall, or contact the course organisers via the Freelance at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please book as soon as possible, as the course will take place subject to there being enough enrollments. While it's designed for photographers, other journalists who have to handle images in their work are also welcome.
Cheques should be made payable to NUJ London Freelance Branch and sent to: Freelance Office, NUJ, Headland House, 308-312 Grays Inn Road, London WC1X 8DP in time for the start of the course. A minimum of seven working days is required for cancelations, or a charge will be incurred.
