The trouble with TTIP

THE FREELANCE notes the irony of the Coalition government's senior partner banging about how it won't surrender "sovereignty" to the EU, whilst at the same time making efforts to fast-track the The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) between the EU and the US. This deal, currently being finalised, would allow US-based multinationals to sue the UK government for passing legislation regulating or restricting their access to UK "markets". The implications for the NHS in particular are alarming - as reported in New Scientist of all places.

NUJ PR & Communications Branch are holding a meeting on the dangers of TTIP to democracy and workers' rights - and possibilities to resist it - on Tuesday 2 December at the NUJ's Headland House HQ. John Hilary, executive director of War on Want, is among the speakers. Details are here.
