Payment promised for e-book lending

THE UK government announced on 7 June that from 1 July the Public Lending Right scheme will cover ebooks and e-audiobooks loaned from public libraries across Great Britain.

Authors will be eligible for payment in the same way as when their works are borrowed as physical books. The announcement noted that e-lending in public libraries has risen to 6,750,000 works borrowed in 2017, from 750,000 in 2011/12.

Interestingly, the announcement was made on the day the regulations were laid before Parliament, and one source suggests members have until 16 July to object.
